American portrait album : album of cartes de visite, ca. 1860-1880.

Small bound album contains cartes de visite, most about 10.5 x 6 cm. Several subjects are identified, usually with the inscription of the sitter's name. They include, Leland Stanford, William Gannaway Brownlow, Charles Clayton (possible owner of the album), Henry Dutton, A.H. Phelps, and Thomas H. Selby. One photograph is inscribed to Mr. Charles Clayton from our Shing, July 16, 1869. Several men are depicted as soldiers including Joseph Wood (most of these are engravings). One photo depicts Arlington House, the headquarters of the federal army during the Civil War. There are two portraits of Chinese men and one portrait of a woman.

William G. Brownlow was a minister, newspaper publisher, and governor, who attacked the Confederacy after Tennessee seceded from the Union.
